    How to start your system

    If you have just purchased a Sun-Mar system, then this guide on how to start up your system is for you

    Once your Sun-Mar system is fully installed, and the ventilation system is running, you need to add a starter bed before the system can be used

    For Sun-Mar Compact, Excel and Excel NE

    These steps are only used when starting up your on-floor / self-contained toilet system models for the first time or when you have emptied the drum entirely and need to re-start the compost.

    Step-by-Step Guide

    Media required; WCT Sun Mix Green (equivalent to Sun-Mar Compost Sure Green)

    1. Pour 10 litres for (EXCEL or EXCEL NE) or 7 litres for (COMPACT) of a bag of WCT Sun Mix Green into a bucket and add 2 litres of warm water. Add 1/2 of the WCT Microbe Mix packet to the bucket. Allow the mixture to absorb the water for about one hour.
    2. Scoop the mixture into the patented Bio-Drum™ through the opening under the toilet seat on the toilet. Rotate the drum to mix. The opening in the drum must remain open under the toilet seat. The Sun-Mar system is now ready for use.

    Note that;

    • When you first start up the Sun-Mar toilet, it will take approximately 6 weeks at optimum temperatures (18 to 32c) before you will have sufficient quantities of microbes in the drum to achieve good compost base. During this time, the contents of the patented Bio-Drum™ start out as WCT Sun Mix Green and waste and over the first 6 weeks, you will notice that the compost will hold moisture and will become more uniformly dark in colour. During the first 6 weeks, you may notice that some of the mixture has fallen through the drum screen onto the evaporation chamber to the left of the finishing drawer. This should be raked out and removed with the rake tool provided with the unit.
    • The Sun-Mar systems require a special grade of wood shavings that are available from WCTNZ and are already in the WCT Sun Mix Green
    • Regular toilet paper may be used. Toilet paper is a good source of carbon for your compost, so it may be added to the Bio-Drum™

    Important!
    WCTNZ cannot guarantee the operation of your unit unless you are using approved Bulking Agent and Microbe mixtures. For more information on the bulking agent mixtures see here.

    CONGRATULATIONS! You have now completed the setup of your new composting toilet.
