Trelino® systems are designed for hassle-free maintenance, and most issues can be resolved easily by the user.
If you are not running a fan, you will need to make sure that you apply a good amount of bulking agent on top of each deposit, ensuring it is covered completely. Make sure the bulking agent is a fine, moist material.
If you are running a fan and experiencing foul odours, check that the fan is functioning properly and inspect the ventilation system for any obstructions. If the fan is no longer working, replace it.
If the foul odour is coming from the liquids chamber, it is likely that there is a salts buildup. Fill the chamber with a white vinegar and water solution, then rinse thoroughly.
Tip: Keep a bottle of Nature Flush Enzymes (a universal cleaner and compost treatment) nearby and spray the urinal after each use to help eliminate odours from any residue left on the surface.
Only human excreta, toilet paper, and bulking agent should be placed in your composting toilet—avoid adding anything else, even if it is organic.
If the solids chamber is filling up too quickly, reconsider the amount of bulking agent you're using. The aim is to add just enough to create the proper composting mix and mitigate odours (in non-vented systems) without overfilling the chamber.
Consider using a separate receptacle for toilet paper disposal, as toilet paper can be bulky.
Lift both the solids and the liquids chamber out of the housing. Spray the inside of the housing and any other effected parts (i.e. the liquids and solids chambers, etc) with Nature Flush Enzymes and leave for 10 minutes, then wipe with a soft cloth or paper towel. In the future, make sure to empty the liquids chamber when it is 3/4 full.
If your Trelino® composting toilet is set up without an external vent, you may experience buildup of condensation inside the unit. While some condensation is normal, excessive moisture can disrupt the composting process, leading to unpleasant odours and poor decomposition. Simply use a soft cloth or paper towel to wipe the condensation away. Consider leaving the toilet lid open and passively aerating the room (leaving the window open) when you are in a stationary position to allow moisture to evaporate.
To interrupt the fly breeding cycle, add a layer of diatomaceous earth to the compost chamber. Follow up by spraying the compost with an organic fly repellent like Bambooloo™ Tamper Spray, which serves as both an insect deterrent and compost treatment.
